The limits of my language mean the limits of my world

About me

Hi, I'm Susie - a self-professed languages fiend! My love of language has opened so many doors for me. Not just a door into the world of literature and books, but doors into music, theatre, culture, friendship and the world of work. And I'm here to guide you through your language learning adventure.

My Language Journey:

I wasn't born into a bilingual family, so I understand the challenges of starting from zero. I embarked on the journey of learning French and German from scratch, and in doing so developed an even greater fondness for the English language too. Raised in the UK to British parents who love to travel, my first French phrase, "Deux portions de frites, s'il vous plaît," was taught to me by my dad as I nervously approached the chip van on a camping holiday in Carnac.

At the age of 16, I achieved an unexpected milestone by winning the German prize at school. I still cherish the moment when my teacher, Mrs Lewis, awarded me a hardback Collins German dictionary.

My dedication to languages led me to Aston University, where I delved into the intricacies of both French and German, exploring everything from grammar to culture. This period laid the foundation for my career in language education.

My experiences expanded as I ventured abroad. Spending ten weeks as a monitor on language holiday camps in Barcelona, I helped Spanish pupils learn English through music, sport, and creative activities. This experience equipped me with invaluable tools to support my students on their language journeys.

A captivating year in Bordeaux, France, further enriched my language skills as I taught English at both a secondary and primary school. Immersed in French culture, I traveled extensively throughout France, soaking in its richness.

Returning to England, I embarked on a 25-year career in various educational roles across Bristol and Gloucestershire. From teaching French and German to students of all abilities to providing one-to-one English and languages support for those with SEND and SEMH needs, I've been dedicated to making learning accessible to all.

The inception of Tuition Taunton marks the realisation of my dream. Settling in Somerset, I discovered the perfect platform to share my passion for my mother tongue English, and both French and German language and culture, through personalised one-to-one tuition.

Whether you're aiming to pass a particular exam, gearing up for an upcoming holiday, or simply seeking the joy of learning a foreign language, I'm here to support you on your journey.
